How to get your Learners Permit

So you've decided you want to get out on the road...

how do you start?

You need to pass a theory test (CTT) in order to be granted your Learners Permit before you can begin driving. All of the information and road rules you will need to learn to pass the CTT are in the handbooks Drive Safe (for cars) and Ride Safe (for motorbikes and mopeds). If you prefer a physical copy you can pick up these handbooks from the Department of Transport (DoT) Licensing Centre at 178 Stirling Terrace in Albany. If you are going for a Moped Licence, then we recommend that you have a look at the car handbook as well, just to make sure you have a good understanding of the road rules.

Once you have read your handbook, go to the DoT website where you can test yourself using the practice theory tests.  You can also try the Road Safety Games & Quizzes.

When you are ready to sit the theory test, go into the Licensing centre at 178 Stirling Terrace, Albany. They are open from 8:15 am to 4:30 pm and you do not need to make an appointment. Allow at least 45 minutes to do the test.

Your Learners Permit is valid for three years and taking the CTT costs $20.20. When you are granted your Learners Permit, you will also need to pay the Licence Application fee, which is $117.80. This bigger fee includes the cost of eventually taking your Practical Driving Assessment (PDA). This assessment should only be booked once your driving skills are of a high standard (we can advise if you are ready!). Some people find it odd that you are asked to pay for your PDA well before you need it but it is how the process works in WA.
